Public Records Requests

It is the policy of the City to provide access to public records and information so that the right of the people to remain informed is protected. Public records are open for inspection during regular business hours.

The City of Wasilla will respond to a public records request in a prompt manner consistent with both legal restrictions and the City’s obligation to the public. A public record request will be filled within 10-business days. If the request will take more time, the City may take an extension of an additional 10-business days.

Some records of the City are exempt from public disclosure because they are declared privileged or confidential. Please refer to WMC 2.48.120 for exemptions of particular records; you may also refer to WMC 2.48, City Records, in our code for more information.

It is the policy of the City to redact specific information of a personal nature. These would include but are not limited to birth dates, identification numbers such as driver license, and social security numbers.

If the production of records for one requester in a calendar month exceeds five staff hours, the requester shall pay the personnel costs required during the month to complete the search and duplication of the record requested. If this is the case, a deposit may be required before the research is performed and the remaining balance is due in full before the records are disclosed.

The City is not required to create records, compile, summarize, outline, or in any other way create information from existing public records.

There will be a copy charge for items requested as shown on the Charges for Services and Copies list.
