ATV Information

General Information

The City of Wasilla has supported the ability to allow off road use within city limits and continues to do so.  However, in recent years the Wasilla Police Department has seen a marked increase in the use of off-road vehicles (ATV's, dirt bikes, dune buggies and snowmobiles) within the city limits.  We have also received an increase in complaints to the department about the use of off road vehicles within city limits.  With the increased use, there is a larger number of riders who have failed to recognize that there are rules within the City of Wasilla regulating the use of off-road vehicles.

With that in mind, we ask that you help us educate your family and fellow riders with the following information:

  • The speed limit for off-road vehicles is 10-miles per hour in the city and 5-miles per hour in parking lots.  If you are kicking up a large cloud of dust, you are going too fast and having a negative impact on the individuals around you.
  • All riders must come to a complete stop before crossing any road or driveway.  Jumping driveways or roads is not only illegal but extremely dangerous.
  • Vehicles of any type are not to be driven on paved bike paths.  Paths like the one along Knik-Goose Bay Road are for non-motorized use.  All of the gravel kicked up onto the path by off-road vehicles in some places makes it unsafe for bicyclists, skaters or people walking and running.
  • All riders must be at least 16 years of age.  If under 16 years of age they must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult.  More off-road vehicle accidents are caused by unsupervised children than any other reason.
  • Helmets are required to be worn by all off-road vehicles riders regardless of age.
  • Headlights and taillights are required on all off-road vehicles.

The penalty for each of the above offenses can be a fine of $100 or more and impounding of the off-road vehicle.  In an effort to avoid having to resort to such measures, the Wasilla Police Department asks you, the community, to help us curb this growing problem and to ride responsibly.  Copies of all off-road vehicle regulations are available free at the Wasilla Police Department.  If you have questions please contact us at 352-5401 and we will be happy to assist you.
