Welcome to the Office of the City Clerk

The Office of the City Clerk provides a direct link between the residents of the City of Wasilla, their elected officials, and agencies of government at all levels. The City Clerk and her staff work directly for the City Council. The City Clerk administers the Office of the City Clerk and serves as a conduit to the Administration, the public, and other agencies on behalf of the Wasilla City Council.

Additional areas of responsibility include:

• Management of the Wasilla Municipal Code;
• Records management and public information requests related to the City Council and City Clerk;
• Administration of city elections to include, the certification of initiative, referendum, and recall petitions;
• Preparation of City Council legislation, meeting agendas, and packets;
• Appointments to City Commissions, special purpose committees or to be an administrative hearing officer;
• Appeals to a hearing officer to include land use appeals and animal care and regulation appeals; and
• Administers records for the Wasilla Aurora Cemetery.

Kristie Smithers, MMC
City Clerk
Appointed as City Clerk in December of 1997, Kristie Smithers brings over 26 years of experience in the municipal clerks profession to Wasilla.

Smithers is an active member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks and was elected to their Board of Directors representing the states of Alaska, Oregon, Washington, California and Hawaii. She will serve a three-year term culminating in May 2013.

She is a member of the Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks and served as their President in 2001. Her leadership continues by assisting the Alaska Municipal League as a committee secretary. She served on their Board of Directors in 2003 and as their parliamentarian from 2002 to 2007.

Smithers received her Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) designation in 2004. She was named the Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks Clerk of the Year in 2006. Smithers is an ardent supporter of education for municipal clerks and enjoys serving the City of Wasilla.     

Sarah Whiteley 
Deputy City Clerkr

Sarah Whiteley joined the City of Wasilla in July 2012. She brings eight years of experience working in local government to the City.

Whiteley graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 2011.

She is an active member of the Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks and is pursuing her Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) designation. 

Whiteley looks forward to dedicating herself to the City of Wasilla and its citizens for years to come.
