Mayor Verne E. Rupright was re-elected Mayor of Wasilla on October 4, 2011.
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1951, Mayor Rupright graduated from Saugus High School in 1969 and later received an Associate of Science in Law Enforcement Management and Administration from North Shore Community College in 1976. In 1981 he received a Bachelor of Arts in Justice from the University of Alaska, Anchorage. In 1992 he received his Jurist Doctorate from the Creighton University School of Law.
Mayor Rupright first came to Alaska in 1972 and then, following his military service, he became a permanent resident of Alaska in 1976. Besides his years in the military, Mayor Rupright has been a defense and personal injury attorney for most of his career.
Mayor Rupright served in the U.S. Air Force from 1970-74 in the Medical Service field. He is a Vietnam veteran and was also in the U.S. Army National Guard/Reserve/Alaska from 1976-1992. His rank in the Army was Captain.
Mayor Rupright has contributed years of public service including being Chairman of the City of Wasilla Planning Commission from 1999-2001; life member of the VFW - post officer and Judge Advocate for 10 years; National American Legion member; Mat-Su School District Advisory Board; Alaska Shriner; Alaska State Defense Force - awarded the Alaska Homeland Defense Medal; certificates of appreciation – City of Wasilla Iditarod Re-start; Mat-Su Youth Court mentor; provided pro bono legal services; lifetime NRA member; and member of the Gun Owners of America.
The Mayor obtained his goals in his first term to update Wasilla’s Comprehensive Plan, pay off the Sports Complex debt and reduce sales tax. He also supports a new Library complex, a commuter rail system as an alternative means of transportation and a key to bringing jobs and employees to Wasilla. Mayor Rupright is committed to improving the public’s trust in government, providing cost effective public services that do not burden the taxpayer, and making balanced decisions with openness and increased public input.
Mayor Rupright has lived in Wasilla for 28 years, is married to wife Bernadette, and they have two daughters, Elizabeth and Charlotte.
